The Impact of Robot Use on Pollution Discharge:A Theoretical Mechanism and Empirical Research

摘要 本文在2006-2015年间中国制造业细分行业污染排放数据基础上,匹配国际机器人联盟统计的机器人存量与增量数据,运用工具变量法,识别和估计了行业机器人存量和增量提高对降低污染排放所起的作用。研究发现:行业机器人存量和增量提高,可以降低工业废气的排放量和一般工业固体废物的产生量,但是对工业废水排放量则没有显著的影响。进一步的机制检验发现,机器人使用降低行业污染排放,主要依靠研发增长效应和人工替代效应来实现。本文从推动机器人使用的角度,提出了减少中国制造业污染排放的政策建议。 Based on the pollution discharge data of China’s manufacturing industry from 2006 to 2015,this paper uses the instrumental variable method to identify and estimate the role of the robot use in reducing pollution discharge by matching the robot stock and incremental data from the International Federation of Robotics.We find that the increase of stock and increment of robots do reduce industrial pollution discharge which includes industrial waste gas emission and general industrial solid waste production,but has no significant impact on industrial wastewater discharge.Further mechanism testsshow that the use of robots to reduce industrial pollution discharge mainly depends on R&D growth effect and employment substitution effect.From the perspective of promoting the robot use,this paper proposes policy suggestions for reducing the pollution discharge of China’s manufacturing industry.
