While challenging the traditional theater model, the COVID-19 pandemic also provides an opportunity for innovation in the theater practice.Starting from the live and recorded broadcast of theater performances, several theaters in German-speaking countries create specifically dramas for online audiences and hybrid dramas combining online and offline methods, which goes beyond the traditional concepts of"immediateness"and"liveness",facilitates the dissemination of online drama and brings new aesthetic experiences to the audiences. This article reviews the exploration of the structure and form of drama in German-speaking theater communities since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and gives an outlook on the future development of online drama.
