A Text Research on the Date of Cai Hesen’s Admission to the Party and the Youth League

:蔡和森是中国共产党早期党员之一,学术界关于他的入党时间有1921年、1922年等不同说法,均以陈公培接受访谈时所说在上海介绍蔡和森与李立三“入党”为依据。而蔡和森自己说1920年起成为中共党员,以他在法国蒙达尼独立开展建党活动为依据,应当说更有道理。蔡和森自己填写的入团时间为1922年,其依据是加入1922年成立的青年团组织“旅欧中国少年共产党”,或者说以中共党员身份兼任团员并担任团中央领导人。1924年6月蔡和森作为超龄团员退团,而不是许多回忆性资料说的“从团员转为党员”。

For lots of historians,the jury is still out on the exact time of Cai Hesen’s initiation into the Communist Party.Academic circles have different opinions about when Cai obtained the Party membership.Most scholars believe Cai Hesen joined the Party in 1921 or 1922 according to a documented interview with Chen Gongpei,who claimed that he offered both Cai Hesen and Li Lisan the idea of joining the Communist Party while they were all in Shanghai.But Cai Hesen vividly recalled that he had been a Communist since 1920 with his independent Party-building activities in Montagnier,France in 1921 as the evidence,and this is admittedly more reasonable.The time of Cai Hesen’s admission to the Youth League filled by Cai himself in his resume was 1922,which was evidenced by his admission to the“Young Communist Party in Europe”,a youth league organization just founded in 1922,or serving as a member of the Communist Party of China and as the central leader of the League at that time.The timeline indicates that Cai Hesen was already a Communist,or rather,a communist leader,when he concurrently became a member of the Youth League.Unlike what has been reported in numerous memoirs where Cai Hesen was promoted from a member of the Youth League to a Communist,he withdrew from the Youth Leage in June,1924,simply because he was overage at that time.
