Researches on narrow reading show reading content-related texts is beneficial to reducing learners’vocabulary load and improving comprehension.Based on narrow reading, this article proposes narrow viewing mode for subtitled film and television learning, and compares the density of new words, the number of word types and word families, and the recurrence rate of low-frequency word families in three kinds of L2 subtitled film and television programs with different degrees of relevance. The results show the density of new words, word types and word families in narrow view are significantly lower than those in the weakly-related and unrelated groups, and the low-frequency word families with 5 or 10 plus recurrences is significantly more than those of the other two.Further analysis shows the vocabulary load of strongly-related or narrow viewing is the smallest, which is most conducive to the understanding of learners and the incidental vocabulary acquisition of low-frequency word families. Therefore, narrow viewing is one of the most effective means for L2 subtitled film and television learning, which can better reduce the vocabulary requirements of learners to understand films and televisions, stimulate vocabulary learning potential, and bring significant incidental vocabulary acquisition benefits.
