爱丽丝·萨拉·泰勒是20世纪美国图书馆史上重要的图书馆学教育家,也是推动美国图书馆事业发展的卓越领导人。从1895年到1929年,在长达34年的图书馆生涯中,泰勒先后在克利夫兰公共图书馆、爱荷华州图书馆委员会以及凯斯西储大学图书馆学院从事图书馆管理与教育工作,为推动美国图书馆事业的全面发展和进步做出了重大的历史贡献。一方面,泰勒积极推动爱荷华州公共图书馆服务能力建设、凯斯西储大学图书馆学院建设并参与美国图书馆协会活动,从实践中系统总结美国图书馆事业发展的经验与教训;另一方面,泰勒对公共图书馆功能、图书馆资金利用、馆员教育与培训、图书馆推广等问题也进行了深入的理论思考,并形成了独具特色的思想体系。时至今日,泰勒的图书馆学思想与实践活动对后辈图书馆人依然具有重要的启示意义。

Alice Sara Taylor is an important library science educator in the history of American libraries in the 20th century and an outstanding leader in promoting the development of American libraries.From 1895 to 1929,during her 34-year library career,Taylor worked in library management and education at the Cleveland Public Library,the Iowa State Library Commission,and the Library College of Case Western Reserve University,which made a significant historical contribution to the overall development and progress of the American librarianship.On the one hand,Taylor actively participated in the activities of the American Library Association,promoted the construction of the Library College of Case Western Reserve University,and actively advised on improving the service capabilities of the Iowa Public Library,and systematically summarized the American librarianship experience and lessons.On the other hand,Taylor had also thought deeply about the functions of public libraries,the use of library funds,librarian education,library extension and other issues,and had formed unique theoretical system of library science.Even to this day,Taylor’s thoughts and practical activities of library science still have important enlightenment significance to the younger scholars.
