Behind the Insanity of the Narrator in The Yellow Wallpaper:An Analysis Based on Karen Horney′s Theory of Neurosis

文章以卡伦·霍妮的神经症理论为视角,对《黄色糊墙纸》中的叙事者“我”疯癫结局背后的原因进行了了探讨:社会文化环境固有的矛盾和冲突、人际关系缺失导致叙事者“我”从屈从型人格转向孤立型人格,在人格转变过程中,尽管叙事者“我”采取了构建理想化意象和释放虐待式冲动等防御性策略,但其内心的焦虑和冲突不仅未能因此得到缓解,反而愈加严重,故最终必然走向疯癫。通过神经症视角的解读可以看出,作者吉尔曼创作此小说的意图在于反映知识女性当时所面临的精神困境。该解读在当代仍具有一定的现实意义。

From the perspective of Karen Horney′s neurosis theory,this paper discusses the reasons behind the madness of the narrator“I”in The Yellow Wall paper:The inherent contradictions and conflicts in the social and cultural environment,and the lack of interpersonal relationships have caused the narrator“I”to shift from a submissive personality to an isolated personality.In the process of personality transformation,even though the narrator“I”has adopted defensive strategies as building an idealized image and releasing abusive impulses,“my”inner anxiety and conflicts not only failed to be relieved,but became more serious,so“I”eventually went crazy.From the perspective of neurosis,it can be seen that Gilman′s intention in writing this novel is to reflect the spiritual dilemma faced by intellectual women at that time.This interpretation still has certain practical significance in contemporary society.
