At the end of the Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties, sea stories about merchants and whales with similar plots were found both in Chinese and Arabian documents as well as in ancient Roman historical books. In ancient India, there were also some Jataka with similar plots. The origin of these merchant and whale stories is in India, based on the merchant and exhausting fish story in the Jataka. In the multi-civilization interaction of the maritime Silk Road, this type of the story spread from India to China,Persia and Europe, and formed various whale sailing stories with the same plot but still having their own cultural characteristics. To a certain extent, this process reflects the basic formula of multi-civilization interaction along the ancient maritime Silk Road.
