The acceptable conditions and cognitive mechanism of nominal clauses based on grounding

本文以入场理论为框架,基于BNC中的真实语料,探究名词性分句复句允准条件与认知机制。研究认为,名词性分句复句是概念化主体对有嵌入关系复杂事件感知、体验和符号化的一类复杂象征结构,其中that/θ、whether/if和wh-elements经过不同程度语法化,从原本的词义和功能"语法转喻"为外显有定从属连词入场元素,成为非/独立的定式小句进入名词性分句复句构式的允准条件;概念化主体通过这些从属连词入场元素,将有嵌入关系复杂言语事件与认知场景连接起来,组构或解构名词性分句复句,致使有嵌入关系复杂言语事件和名词性分句复句之间相互作用、彼此映射,构成名词性分句复句认知机制。研究结果可为名词性分句复句教学和习得提供认知理据。

With the Grounding Theory as the framework,based on the authentic data of BNC,this paper probes into the acceptable conditions and cognitive mechanism of nominal clauses.It is contended that nominal clauses are a kind of complex symbolic constructions which are of the conceptualizers’ perceptions,experiences and symbolizations about the complicated events with embedded relation.Through "grammatical metonymy",that/?,whether/if,wh-elements are grammaticalized with different extent,from their original meaning and function to overt and definite subordinator grounding elements,which become acceptable conditions for(non-)independent speech events to enter the cognitive ground of nominal clause constructions.With these subordinator grounding elements,the conceptualizers connect the complicated events with embedded relation and the cognitive ground,and construct or deconstruct nominal clauses,resulting in interplaying and mapping between the complicated events with embedded relation and nominal clauses,which constitute the cognitive mechanism of nominal clauses.The findings will provide cognitive evidences for the instruction and acquisition of nominal clauses.
