The early 20th century marks the break of modernist British novels from their realist predecessors, and witnesses several breakthroughs in prescription and treatment of modern diseases. The coincidence in time calls for a crosscheck of the intersection of modern British novels and disease, and exploring the specter of disease in novels created by modern British writers such as Virginia Woolf. It is found that Woolf regards disease as a special aesthetic experience and ideal subject for modern novels and uses disease writing to show that a modern writer should be more concerned with spiritual world of characters and work to represent their thoughts, emotions, consciousness and cognition when she is confronted with the debate between the materialist and spiritual novelists.By writing disease in Mrs.Dalloway,Woolf makes creative attempts in both the form and content of modern novels, and the specter of disease looms in the structure, characterization, narrative perspectives and themes of Mrs.Dalloway.
