A Traumatic Interpretation of Lester Farley’s Mental Dilemma in“The Human Stain”

菲利普·罗斯是美国杰出的犹太作家,曾被誉为"活着的文学三传奇"之一,在当代美国文坛享有重要地位。《人性的污秽》是其2000年出版的长篇小说,于2001年获得美国笔会/福克纳奖。小说描写了几位主人公的悲惨命运,揭示了人类生存的困境。该文以朱迪思·赫尔曼的创伤与复原理论为基础,探析小说中越战老兵莱斯特·法利创伤产生的原因、症状以及疗愈失败导致的精神困境,以期探索出缓解恶劣事件造成的精神危机的有效措施,使人们保持正常平和的心态面对人生,从而减少悲剧的发生。这对后疫情时代,人们遭受巨大精神困境后的创伤复原具有一定的意义。

Philip Roth is an outstanding Jewish writer in the United States, once known as one of the “three living legends of literature”, and enjoys an important position in contemporary American literary circles. “The Human Stain”is a novel published in 2000 and won the PEN/Faulkner Award in 2001. The novel describes the tragic fate of several protagonists, and reveals the plight of human existence. Based on Judith Herman’s trauma and recovery theory, this paper explores the causes and symptoms of the trauma of the Vietnam War veteran Lester Farley in the novel, as well as the mental dilemma caused by the failure of healing, in order to explore appropriate and effective measures to alleviate the mental crisis caused by bad events, so that people can maintain a normal and peaceful attitude toward life, thereby reducing the occurrence of tragedies. This has a certain significance for the trauma and recovery of people in the post-epidemic era.
