The fief system was an important part of the feudal society in Western Europe and had a com⁃prehensive influence on many aspects of the society.The direct purpose of the fief was to strengthen the military construction and enhance the fighting capacity of the troops,so its military functions deserve fur⁃ther study.The fief played an important role in the feudal society of Western Europe in the formation of knightly army,the provision of military service remuneration,the command and mobilization of the army.With the development of economy,politics and military affairs,the military function of fief gradually showed its insurmountable disadvantages.The researching is necessary for to understand the function and nature of feudal fief and to realize the characteristics of feudal society in Western Europe.
