To improve the comprehensibility of the traffic signs, Chinese character height of traffic auxiliary signs is studied by using experimental method. Firstly, the drivers’ recognition process of traffic signs are analyzed based on information processing model and the Chinese character height model based on speed and the number of characters is constructed. Then, the reading threshold of Chinese characters are analyzed by experiment. Finally, the minimum character height requirements of gantry type and cantilever type traffic auxiliary signs are put forward according to the reading threshold and speed. The results show that:(1)when the number of characters exceeds 7, there are significant differences in the reading threshold of Chinese sentences with different characters numbers, and the growth rate of reading threshold increases with the increase of the number of Chinese characters.(2)The Chinese character height of traffic auxiliary signs should increase with the increase of vehicle speed and the number of characters.(3) The character height setting of national standard(GB-5768) is applicable to the auxiliary signs within 15 characters and that is not applicable when the speed exceeds 120 km/h and the character number exceeds 16.
