上古时期,中华大地上生活着多个不同的部族,也存在着无数传说中的始祖和部族英雄。夏商周三代的"天帝观"揭开了传说向历史转化的序幕,也为后代五帝系统的形成奠定了基础。春秋战国之际的五行文化与五方观念催生了以太暤、炎帝、黄帝、少暤和颛顼为核心的"人神合一"的五帝系统。西汉时期,司马迁的《史记》选择黄帝、颛顼、帝喾、尧、舜等作为五帝,明确其"血缘关系",将他们从传说时代的部族始祖和英雄完全转变成人间圣王,最终完成了五帝系统的定型。

In ancient times, many different tribes lived on the land of China, and there were countless legendary ancestors and tribal heroes;the "Viewpoint of Heavenly God" in the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties opened the prelude to the transformation of legends into history, and it also laid the foundation for the five-emperor system. The five elements culture and the five orientations concept boosted the five emperor system of "the unity of man and god" during the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period. The five emperors were Taijun, Yandi, Huangdi, Shaojun and Zhuanxu in this period. In the Western Han Dynasty, Records of the Historian written by SIMA Qian Chose Huangdi, Zhuanxu, Diku, Yao, Shun as the five emperors, clarified their "blood relationship" which completely transformed them from the tribal ancestors and heroes of the legendary age into holy human kings. The five-emperor system formed eventually.
