Robert Browning’s dramatic monologue reflects what Bakhtin called the“double-voice structure”in its narrative,in which two speakers and two sets of discourse systems appear in the same context(one is the author’s discourse and the other is the character’s).The author’s voice implied in this narrative structure sometimes plays the role of anti-monologue,subverting what the speaker says.In Browning’s My Last Duchess, the speaker’s voice is constantly overturned by the author’s voice, his lies exposed. This gives the poem an unexpected artistic effect, and thus reveal the real life and destiny of women under patriarchal rule.
