Epidemiological investigations found that the average age of onset of coronary heart disease(CHD)in women is 10-15 years later than that of men. The incidence of CHD in women before menopause is 1/10~3/10 of that in men, however, the incidence after menopause has increased significantly. This finding suggests that there is a significant gender difference in the occurrence and progression of CHD.The main reason may be related to the changes in female estrogen levels. CHD is a chronic inflammatory disease involving multiple factors. The effect of the inflammation runs through the entire process of disease occurrence and development, and ultimately determines the outcome of the disease. This article reviews the influence of estrogen on the progression of CHD inflammation.
