Poetic analysis of Pu Songling's The Overlord Temple

蒲松龄是小说家也是诗人,除著有《聊斋志异》外,还写有诗、词、文、赋等作品。在其《霸王祠》这首诗中,他用李贺一般凄婉湿冷的笔调,表达了对历史上失败的英雄项羽的无限同情。这是感同身受之笔,也是同病相怜之语。这些情感和意象,后来都表现在他的《聊斋志异》中了。特别是在《公孙九娘》《叶生》等经典小说中,均可以看到《霸王祠》这首诗的草蛇灰线。

Pu Songling,a well-known novelist,is in fact a poet as well.Apart from his masterpiece—the collection of novels Liaozhai Zhiyi,he also wrote many poems and The OverLord Temple was one of them.In this poem,in the writing style of Li He,a poet in the Tang Dynasty,Pu Songling expressed in a miserable tone his infinite sympathy for Xiang Yu,a hero who had failed in history,while deep inside,somewhat the author was pitiful for himself,too.These kinds of emotions in The Overlord Temple were later expressed in his masterpiece Liaozhai Zhiyi,especially in its classic novels such as Gongsun Jiuniang and Ye Sheng,which to some extent reflected the influence that this poem had on Pu Songling’s later literary works.
