The emergence of sustainability theory has directly contributed to a major shift in the world’s development strategies, and in recent years sustainability has become increasingly influential in planning, housing and urban policy. The debate on sustainability no longer sees sustainability solely as an environmental issue;it also encompasses economic and social dimensions. Discussions on sustainable development usually focus on the environmental or economic aspects of sustainability, with the social dimension of sustainability remaining a neglected aspect of sustainable development. The literature focusing on social sustainability is so limited that there is still a lack of systematic research on the concept. Socially sustainable communities are equitable, diverse, interconnected, democratic and provide a good quality of life. Fundamentally, it is a question of equity and justice. The underlying paradox is that social sustainability is difficult to achieve without improving social equity and social progress. There are multiple dimensions to sustainable social development, of which social equity and procedural justice are important directions for sustainable social development.
