After WWII, both Britain and Japan were impacted by the rising power of the United States. The Japan-born British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro depicts the immense American inf luence in both Britain and Japan. The United States, the common other of Japan and Britain, was highly praised in both countries, and the young, especially, embraced Americanization. What is more, through their depiction of that common other, three novels by Kazuo Ishiguro reveal his own identity as one of those who have been othered. Ishiguro is greatly attached to his spiritual homeland, Japan, and feels alienated in his actual homeland, Britain, which indicates his uncertain identity as lingering in "the Third Space".
