Conflict, Loss and Construction: On the Three Evolutions of Wang Yuan’s Cultural Identity in Pearl S. Buck’s A House Divided

赛珍珠拥有中美双重文化背景,却难以被任何一方完全接受,一生都在努力通过各种途径特别是小说创作来思考文化身份问题。本文结合赛珍珠的生平,从文化身份的视角分析《大地三部曲》第三部《分家》中王源的文化身份的三次嬗变,即处于异质文化中遭遇的文化身份的冲突、回国后身份的失落及之后通过融合中西文化完成自我文化身份的建构,揭示赛珍珠藉此表达的理想的文化身份建构理念,以期对异质文化之间的交流和沟通提供启示。

Pearl S.Buck was not completely accepted by the USA or China in spite of,or rather,because of her bicultural background,and she spent her entire life addressing the issue of cultural identity in various ways,and through her novel writing in particular.From the perspective of cultural identity,and based on textual analysis,this article studies how Wang Yuan’s cultural identity undergoes three changes:his cultural conflict with American culture,his loss of identity after returning to China and his construction of a new cultural identity,combining positive parts of both Chinese and American cultures.Pearl S.Buck's literary construction of an ideal cultural identity aims to promote the communication between heterogeneous cultures.
