自北魏始,契丹族就被汉文史书所记录。《北史》是我国较早记述契丹族暨契丹政权的史书,纵观该书对契丹族的记述,大致可以归纳为三个阶段:一是将契丹族夹杂在诸多附属国中漫不经心地记述阶段;二是频繁记述契丹族统治者向中原王朝进贡次数;三是对契丹族地方政权来历和契丹族的民族习俗进行专章描述。尽管《北史》对于契丹族的记述内容比较简略,线条粗疏,更多地表现为"流水账"形式,然而在这简略的记述中,却透露出契丹族发展的迹象,成为研究契丹族发展和契丹族地方政权建立的珍贵原生态材料。因此,该书关于契丹族的述录,在契丹族研究中,值得特别重视,也具有特定的文献价值。
