Treasure Writing and Cultural Coding in Journey to the West

通过梳理《西游记》中的宝物描写,探究《西游记》通过宝物书写所传递出的文化信号。明清小说中的宝物描写与小说构思及人物形象塑造密切相关。宝物崇拜多受到佛道以及民间宗教的影响,晚明知识界和平民的“好物”“赏物”风尚使《西游记》故事中的日常器物与宗教圣物都转化为“宝物”,人们对器物的痴迷,显示出文化阶层的世俗化趋向和社会各阶层对物质财富的追求,以及“宝物”象征社会地位这一共识的强化。

By combing the description of treasures in Journey to the West,this paper explores the cultural signals expressed by the writing of treasures in Journey to the West.The treasure writing is closely related to the constitution and character shaping of novels in the Ming and Qing Dynasty.In addition,the treasure worship description is mostly influenced by the development of Buddhism,Taoism and folk religion during that period.The common trend of“pursuing things”and“appreciating things”in the intelligentsia and common people in the late Ming Dynasty transformed the sacred things of religion into the writing of“treasure”in the stories.The obsession of people with things and objects shows the secularization trend of the intelligentsia class and the strengthening of the consensus of material wealth and social status symbolized by“treasure”.
