In the stories of engraving tomb tablets and epitaphs of officials in the Southern Song Dynasty, the most striking thing is that many politicians’epitaphs or tomb tablet inscriptions were engraved years or even decades after their death.Through the analysis of this phenomenon, this paper reveals that the time of engraving and the content of epitaph are closely related to the political situation at the time.Epitaphs reflect the up and down of social status of the political figures after death,as well as the change of appraisal standard by governments at different levels.Tight connection exists between the engraving and government’s appraisal.
