At the turn of the 20th century, the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck(1862-1949)applied the art of“leaving the blank”to drama. He pioneered the extensive practice of blank-leaving in western drama, and enriched profoundly the European drama of the 20th century.Meanwhile, his conception and application of blank-leaving share certain traits with classic Chinese literature.Relying upon the insights of Chinese classical literature, this study aims to throw a new light on the mystique of his drama, and also probe the form and significance of blank-leaving in a larger context.
