The Diversity of the Connotations of"Pomegranate"in Ancient Poetry

石榴作为外来物种,自汉代起,其种植逐步由皇家宫苑向士人民众普及。随之出现了石榴赋、石榴诗、石榴词、石榴曲的文学创作,历代吟咏不绝。石榴作为文学意象,其以物喻人尤指女性之美。“石榴裙”因武则天而著名一时。因为石榴的花期较晚,故石榴意象也往往用以表达生不逢时、怀才不遇的郁塞之情。石榴色彩繁多艳丽,形态富贵雍容,因而寓意大吉大美。又因其胚珠多数、种子众多,使之有着多子多福的象征。古诗词的石榴书写逐渐积累形成了意蕴丰富的石榴文化。

Pomegranate,as an alien species,gradually involves special cultural significance with its popularity since the Han Dynasty.There have been many poems about pomegranate in the form of Fu,poem,Ci and Qu,etc.year after year.The pomegranate is always presented as a pretty female in literary works with different implications and connotations.Generally speaking,there are three aspects:one is about the fame of what is called"Shi Liu Qun(pomegranate-red skirt)"for the Great Empress WU Zetian;the other is that the pomegranate plays a lyric function of metaphor to express feelings of depression or frustration in ancient poetry just because of its late florescence;and the third is that pomegranate is usually imbued with rich cultural connotations of blessings for its bright color and multiple fruits.
