Victor Hugo’s Quatre-Vingt-Treize involves a lot of environmental descriptions,and the setting of many places makes the story more spatial and layered.Both the place of the Vendée rebellion and the place where the Republican Party suppressed it have formed a kind of“public place”.In these public places,the two camps on the surface are making their own eff orts to win the victory.In fact,the places imply a dark confl ict between the revolutionary law and human morality.
