历史政治制度学可谓历史政治学的一个分支,是从历史的角度研究当下政治制度。历史制度主义研究范式是其兴起的一个背景渊源。会通政制、引古筹今,既是历史政治制度学的核心内涵、主要特征,也是中国古代史学、政治学的鲜明特征。董仲舒的《春秋繁露》、杜佑的《通典》都是古代历史政治制度学的典范。熔铸义理、经制和事功于一炉,"言史必以制度为重心"的南宋浙东史学派是古代最早的一个历史政治制度学流派。在近现代政治变迁的过程中,历史政治制度学一直发挥着重要作用。在大数据技术的背景下政治学、历史学、公共管理学、社会学、法学、文化学、组织学等多学科融合,是当下历史政治制度学发展的最显著特征,它既有扎实丰厚的学科史基础与充足的合理性,又有重要的现实意义与广阔的发展前景。

The historical political institution is a branch of historical politics, which studies the current political system from the perspective of history and it originated from the historical institutionalist research paradigm. The Eastern Zhejiang history school in the Southern Song Dynasty was the earliest school of historical and political institution in ancient times and it holds that learning history must be centered on historical institutions. In the process of modern political change, historical political institution has been playing an important role. In the context of big data technology, the multi-disciplinary integration of political science, history, public administration, sociology, law, culture, organization, etc. is the most significant feature of the current historical political institution.
