In picturebooks Come away from the water, Shirley and Time to get out of the bath, Shirley, the protagonist Shirley must obey the adult authority and acquire the gender norms expected by the society in reality. In her fantasy world, however, Shirley is witty, brave and adventurous. By comparison, Shirley′s mother is oppressive, cultivating her daughter to conform to the social role;but at the same time, she is also the oppressed, struggling hard to fulfill her role as a mother. The uncertainty of narration in John Burningham′s picturebooks complicates the child-adult relationship. Meanwhile, the blending of fantasy and reality and the ambiguous interaction between words and pictures provide readers with rich reading experience.
