The translation is excerpted from Dr. Risha Lee’s Ph.D. dissertation entitled Constructing Community: Tamil Merchant Temples in India and China, 850-1281 submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Columbia University in 2012. Comprising Chapter Four and Conclusion part of her dissertation, this article studies the Shiva Temple of Quanzhou with a focus on the Sino-Indic exchanges during the premodern period, the interpretation of Hindu stone carvings scattered in different parts of Quanzhou while picturing a landscape of Tamil migrant merchants from southern India sojourning in the coastal entrepot. What is important in particular is that the author outlines a restoration map of Shiva Temple in Quanzhou built in the Yuan Dynasty based on the careful examination of almost all the extant individual Indic carvings.
