The repatriation of displaced objects from the host countries back to their motherlands has been a hot debating topic in recent years. The fact that not all repatriations are easy to achieve due to the complex issues related to museum management and policy making gives rise to relevant digital practices such as digital repatriation and digital restoration as an alternative solution. However, it is still worth investigating the potentiality of digital technology in bringing together multiple interpretations of the displaced objects from different perspectives, thereby enriching the objects’ narration. Drawing on theories from a cross disciplinary areas such as intercultural communication and semiotics, this research aims to briefly analyze the special identity of the displaced object as a form of material culture, and will use relevant cases to illustrate the role that digital platform can play in constructing the narration of the displaced object.
