A Study of Local Semantic Prosody in Academic Articles

以往的语义韵研究大多聚焦普通文本,是为普通语义韵研究,而局部语义韵是特定语域或体裁专属的语义韵,与普通语义韵具有重要差异。尽管以往研究发现了学术文本存在语义韵,但并未对专业文本或受限语言语境下的局部语义韵进行严格界定,其实现方式也未深入探讨。本文试图对局部语义韵的概念特征予以界定,并通过检查ADJ+result型式在学术论文中的分布及使用,探索局部语义韵的实现方式与功能特征。研究发现,ADJ+result的型式组构及其语义趋向在学术论文中的分布显著不同于普通文本,显示更强的积极语义韵趋势。然而,局部语义韵的实现方式较为隐含。而且,局部语义韵紧密联结于学术话语意义构建,对推进话语发展起着重要作用。局部语义韵不直接相关于普通语义韵,但后者在局部语义韵中留下了显见的剩余意义。

Previous studies on semantic prosody have largely focused on language use in general texts.Local semantic prosody belongs to a particular register or genre, which is largely different from the general semantic prosody and merits a more thorough investigation. Few studies have systematically investigated the features and realizations of a local semantic prosody in specialized texts or restricted language(Firth, 1968), although some studies have examined semantic prosody in academic texts(Wei, 2002;Zhai & Wei, 2016). The present study attempts to define“local semantic prosody”and to reveal its realization and functional features by investigating the distribution and the use of the“ADJ + result”pattern in academic articles. Analyses show that the distributions of the“ADJ + result”pattern and its semantic preferences in academic articles are significantly different from those in general texts, with a stronger tendency toward positive semantic prosodies in academic articles. Nonetheless, the realizations of local semantic prosodies are relatively implicit. Local semantic prosodies are closely related to the construction of academic discourse and play a constructive role in propelling the development of discourse. Our study also indicates that local semantic prosodies are not entirely related to general semantic prosodies, but have a certain connection with the residual meanings from the latter.
