宋词自古以来在中国文学史上占有举足轻重的地位,雅俗共赏是其重要特点,文人墨客们既能用其抒发情感、表达自我,普通民主亦可以用其歌唱,作为娱乐的表现载体。在古代,我国歌曲是两种不同的艺术形式,“歌”是用来唱的,“曲”是用来演奏的,随着燕乐的发展,词开始出现,其最初是由优伶乐师配合音乐而创作唱词、编撰出长词短句,而在燕乐的进化中,宋词根据曲调来填词,逐渐将“歌”与“曲”完美结合,形成了按照乐曲的要求来创作歌词的约定,就有了宋词这一特殊的文学表现形式。
