Research on the Translation and Spread of Mencius in the World of English

《孟子》作为中国古代典籍"四书"之一,在中华优秀传统文化中有着重要的地位。从描写研究的视角分析《孟子》在英语世界的翻译传播情况,考查《孟子》对于英语世界的影响。研究发现:《孟子》共有56个英译本,根据译本发行时期,可以分为三个英译阶段,根据译者身份,可分为四类;整体而言,理雅各译本再版和重印次数最多,大卫·辛顿译本在世界图书馆馆藏、好易读读者评论数量最高,刘殿爵译本谷歌学术引用数量最多,因此这些译本传播较为广泛;谷歌学术引用、网络读者和书评学者对国内译者译本的评论数量均较小,从侧面表明国内译本在英语世界的影响并不显著。

As one of the Four Books of ancient Chinese classics,Mencius plays an important role in the excellent traditional Chinese culture.The paper analyzes the translation and dissemination of Mencius in the world of English from the perspective of descriptive research and examine the influence of Mencius on the world of English.The study found that Mencius has 56 English translations,which are divided into four categories of three English translation stages according to the translation release period.On the whole,the version translated by James Legge was most republished and reprinted.The version translated by David Hinton has the highest number of readers’reviews at Easy Reader as well as in the world library collection.The version translated by Din Cheuk Lau has the highest number of Google Scholar Citations,so these translations are widely spread.The number of comments of Google Scholar Citations,online readers and book reviewers on the translations of domestic translators is small,indicating that the influence of domestic translation in the world of English is not significant.
