For the study of traditional settlements in the Global South, resea rchers cannot solely rely on the tangible approaches of authors like Bernard Rudofsky and Amos Rapoport. In the context of post-colonialist criticism elaborated by Edward Said,Homi Bhabha and Nezar Alsayyad, the traditional settlement is no longer an enclosed, consolidated heritage of the past, but a "transient, fleeting and contingent" object under constant processes of contestation, negotiation and complicity. In this spatial ethnography of Djemaa el-Fna square in Morocco, with the embodied experience combining fieldwork and travelogues from different historical periods, the paper demonstrates the transient spatial strategies on the squa re by bringing together tangibility and intangibility, and unveils the dynamic socio-spatial structure between spectacles and everydayness, and Me and Other.
