BanVilla is a new architectural typology with merged functions of a rural hotel and a suburban villa, designed for a client born in the countryside and now leading an urban-rural lifestyle.Within the theoretical context of the encountering between tradition and modernity in the global urbanization agenda,as well as the social discourse of the transformation of urban-rural relations in contemporary China, this article analyzes how the architect leverages ambiguous tools concerning layout, form, and material, around the allegorical meaning of "Ban/half" and "She/villa",to construct a spatial experience of "halfurban/half-rural" and "half-self/half-other" in relation to its architectural functions. In this way,BanVilla moves away from the criticism and re-affirmation of the urban-rural alienation in earlier projects of rural reconstruction, towards the mediating, blurring, and restructuring of the alienation,to construct a "flowingresidence" condition which returns to the everyday, mobility, and equality, thus becoming a blurred space of "encountering".
