Descartes’ Mathesis Universalis Thought and the Generating Logic of His View on God

The Archimedean point “cogito” of Descartes’ entire metaphysical system is often regarded as the first principle, neglecting to pay attention to “Mathesis Universalis” thought. The “Mathesis Universalis” envisaged by Descartes provides a methodological approach to understanding his philosophical system and first principles. Before cogito comes on, Descartes in the first meditation uses the “the evil demon hypothesis” to ensure the self-clarity of “clarity and distinctness”. In essence, cogito has a hidden transcendental moral legitimacy, which is derived from God. Therefore, there is an invisible tension between Descartes’ conception of God and cogito, namely, the Cartesian cycle. A reaccounting of cartesian epistemological logic from the perspective of “Mathesis Universalis” may open up another way of understanding circular argument.
