Innovation Capabilities Slack and the Silicon Valley Paradox: Causes of the Problem and Solutions

企业创新过程中会产生大量创新能力冗余并有可能导致硅谷悖论,已有研究尚未明确企业持有创新能力冗余的动机及其与硅谷悖论的关系。为探索创新能力冗余与硅谷悖论的成因、寻求硅谷悖论的破解之道,利用324份高技术企业样本数据考察了TOE框架提炼的技术、组织及环境因素对创新能力冗余成因的解释力。研究发现,技术和组织因素促进了企业内可用于获取长期价值的创新能力冗余增长;主流业务危机、约束软化及技术波动会扭曲创新能力冗余的积极作用并导致硅谷悖论的产生;开放式创新环境会抑制企业用于获取长期价值的创新能力冗余的增长,并能从根本上避免硅谷悖论的产生。研究从创新能力冗余视角揭示了企业产生硅谷悖论的原因和机理,为企业优化创新能力冗余治理和破解硅谷悖论提供了理论和现实参考。

In the process of enterprise innovation, there will be a lot of redundancy of innovation capability, which may lead to the Silicon Valley paradox. Existing studies have not clarified the motivation of enterprises holding innovation capabilities slack and its relationship with the Silicon Valley paradox. In order to explore the causes of innovation capabilities slack and Silicon Valley paradox, and to find a solution to the Silicon Valley paradox, this paper examines the explanatory power of technological, organizational and environmental factors derived from TOE framework on the causes of innovation capabilities slack by using the sample data of 324 high-tech enterprises. It is found that technological and organizational factors promote the growth of innovation capabilities slack which can be used to obtain long-term value. The crisis of mainstream business, the softening of constraints and the fluctuation of technology will distort the positive effect of innovation capabilities slack and lead to the Silicon Valley paradox. Open innovation environment can inhibit the growth of innovation capabilities slack used by enterprises to obtain long-term value, and can avoid the generation of Silicon Valley paradox fundamentally. From the perspective of innovation capabilities slack, this study reveals the reason and mechanism of the Silicon Valley paradox, and provides a theoretical and practical reference for enterprises to optimize the management of innovation capabilities slack and solve the Silicon Valley paradox.
