在历史上,彝族有观测星象的传统,通过对宇宙星空的长期观察,积累了丰富的天文学知识,形成了关于宇宙生成和演化、宇宙空间结构、宇宙天体运行及宇宙间万物起源的认识。《西南彝志》《彝族源流》《宇宙人文》《宇宙生化》《物始纪略》等彝文古籍中,有大量关于宇宙和万物生成的记述,其基本观点为:宇宙是自然生成的;宇宙是广袤无垠的;宇宙运行是有规律的;宇宙间万物是由"哎""哺"两种物质演化而成的。
