The Image of Nan Daji in the Writings of Wang Yangming

明嘉靖二年至四年,王阳明与南大吉在越城有三年的交结,此期间南大吉向正在越城丁忧、赋闲的王阳明问政请学,受阳明先生亲炙。在与南大吉的交谊中,王阳明为南大吉撰写了六篇相关的文章。在其笔下,南大吉是一位明德亲民、勇于担当的力行者,求诸己心、逆风勇进的弘道者,昭明灵觉、高风亮节的得道者。王阳明笔下的南大吉形象,彰显了正义者、亲民者、传道者的力量,追求着政治清明、学术朗润、社会和谐的治世理想。无论为官还是为民,南大吉的形象为世人确立了人格高标,具有较高的历史认识价值与现实意义。

For the three years from 1523 to 1525(the second to the fourth year of the reign of Emperor Jiajing of Ming Dynasty),Wang Yangming and Nan Daji befriended each other in Yuecheng,Shaoxing,where Wang went and lived in the wake of the death of his father in memory of him.Nan,the Governor of Shaoxing,asked Wang,who held no public office then,for advice on governance,and received private instruction from him.In the time of their friendship,Wang Yangming wrote six essays to praise Nan.In these writings,Nan Daji was a kind and responsible social practitioner,a self-reflective and courageous preacher,and an enlightened and virtuous man of wisdom.The image of Nan in Wang's writings manifests the power of a man who is just,kind to his subjects,and disseminates knowledge,which has reflected his ideal of social governance for a politically just,academically enlightening,and harmonious society.Whether as an official or not,Nan Daji has been established as a high standard of personality with high historical recognition values and practical significance.
