A Study on the Book Modern Socialism

福井准造著、赵必振翻译的《近世社会主义》一书,在我国首版于1903年,再版于1927年。与当时传入中国的其他社会主义著作相比,这部17万余字的作品以“内容丰富、史实基本准确”而著称,堪称近代以来在中国出版的第一部较系统介绍西方社会主义思想、流派和运动概况的译著,对当时的中国思想界产生了极大影响。但以今天的学术标准来审视,这部作品的缺陷在于,它只不过是一本夹杂着作者主观偏好的摘编之作,而不是一部严谨的学术著作。

Modern Socialism, written by Fukui Junzo, a Japanese scholar, and translated by Zhao Bizhen, was first published in China in 1903 and reprinted in 1927. Compared with other socialist works introduced to China at that time, this book, with more than 170,000 Chinese characters and known for its “rich content and accurate historical materials”, can be said to be the first book translated to China in modern times that systematically introduces Western socialist ideas, schools and movements, exerting a great impact on the Chinese intellectual circles at that time. However, if examined with today’s academic standards, this book is flawed in that it is merely an excerpt of the author’s subjective preferences rather than a meticulous academic work.
