摘要
美国作家沃德曼(Amy Waldman)的小说《屈服》(The Submission)将美国后"9·11"多元文化社会的混乱与失序状态以一处名为"花园"的文化景观的多元阐释呈现在读者面前。小说以"9·11"恐怖袭击事件之后大众对穆斯林群体的偏见和刻板印象为焦点,不仅展现了"9·11"事件给个体与社会带来的文化创伤,而且摆脱了新闻报道即时性和当下性的束缚,成为打破创伤叙述模式的"9·11"小说创新之作。本文以霍尔(Stuart Hall)"编码/解码"3种模式为阐释框架,对《屈服》中展现的"花园"多元立场进行分析,揭示后"9·11"时代语境中个体的文化认同危机及多元文化主义走入仅强调差异而忽视共同点的僵局。
With multi-variant decoding of a cultural spectacle named“The Garden”,Amy Waldman’s first novel The Submission(2011)presents the chaos and disorder of American society to readers.Focusing on prejudice and stereotypes of Muslims in the wake of 9/11 attack,The Submission transcends the narrative mode of 9/11 fiction from depicting the trauma the attack brought to both individuals and the society to memorializing the historical event.This article,framed with Stuart Hall’s three supposed positions of decoding,delves into the multi-variant decoding to“The Garden”,thereby revealing the individuals’identity crisis under post-9/11 context and how multiculturalism slides into an impasse in which differences are weighed more than common ground.
