滟滪堆曾是长江三峡的地理标志。南北朝时随着长江航运的发展,滟滪堆的险与奇渐被人们认识。宋朝以后,滟滪之险与滟滪之奇,常用以类比人世之险与人世之奇。与此同时,滟滪堆也被作为观察对比各类事物的参照。于是滟滪堆在自然内涵之外,又被赋予同等深刻的人文内涵。从一种自然世界的奇观到人文世界的经典意象,奠定于宋代的多元维度的滟滪堆意象,被元明清文人继承,并在细节上进一步丰富。
