晚清江南新耶稣会士晁德蒞的生平与贡献

The Life of A.Zottoli in Jiangnan and His Contributions in the Late Qing Dynasty

晁德蒞是晚清江南新耶稣会传教士。来华50余年间,他继承老耶稣会文化适应政策,对江南地区的传教、教育、学术等领域做出了重要贡献,培养了马相伯、马建忠、李问渔等优秀中国知识分子。他撰写、翻译了多种著作,对清末民国时期来华传教士和西方汉学界均产生了影响,是19世纪下半叶中国文献外译著名翻译家。晁德蒞生平资料比较匮乏,以往学界对其所知不多。本文通过发掘中西档案、传教士书简、教会报刊等稀见材料,试图勾勒出晁氏的生平轨迹和历史贡献,以期增进对这位天主教传教士的认识与理解。

Fr.A.Zottoli was a missionary from the revived Jesuit order in Jiangnan in the late Qing dynasty.During his more than 50 years in China,he inherited the old Jesuit policy of cultural adaptation,made important contributions to the missionary,educational and academic fields in the Jiangnan area,and cultivated outstanding Chinese intellectuals such as Ma Xiangbo,Ma Jiangzhong,and Li Wenyu.He wrote and translated a variety of works,which had an impact on the missionaries in China during the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China and on Western sinology.He was a famous translator of Chinese literature in the second half of the 19th century.However,information about Zottoli’s life is relatively scarce,and the academic world knows little about him.This paper tries to outline the trajectory of Zottoli’s life and his historical contribution by using rare materials such as those from Chinese and Western archives,missionary letters,and church newspapers and periodicals,in order to enhance the understanding of this Catholic missionary.
