本论文以“世界范围内的首部中国文学史”为话题,认为美国汉学家海陶玮1950年初版的《中国文学论题》是美国首部中国文学史,介绍了该文学史的内容与特征,以及著者的学术素养与写作动机。在1901年翟理斯《中国文学史》第一次向英国世界展现中国文学史全貌的基础上,《中国文学论题》开创了美国对中国文学史的研究。

This paper takes Topics in Chinese Literature published in 1950 by the American Chinese scholar James Robert Hightower as the first work on the history of Chinese literature in America.It introduces the content and characteristics of the book,as well as the academic accomplishments and writing motivation of the author Herbert Allen Giles’ A History of Chinese Literature in 1901 had presented a global perspective of the history of Chinese literature to the English-speaking world for the first time, and Topics in Chinese Literature started the study of the the history of Chinese literature in the United States.
