On Eddie’s Tragic Fate in A View from the Bridge Viewed from Conceptual Blending Theory

运用概念整合理论视角,分析戏剧《桥头眺望》中埃迪命运的悲剧性。埃迪与希腊悲情人物共享类属空间,即悲剧起因、悲剧发展、灾难与惩罚、人物醒悟、歌队挽歌、读者怜悯。合成空间是埃迪受制于自己的不伦之恋、为欲望而死、读者惋惜。层创结构不是两个输入空间成分简单的相加,而是经过有选择性地投射,融合成新的语义对应关系。该剧旨在用埃迪的悲情一生启迪读者,净化其心智,提升其自我约束力,以使其免遭各类劫难。

Based on the conceptual blending theory,this paper makes an analysis of Eddie’s tragedy as depicted in the play A View from the Bridge.The generic space concerning the protagonist Eddie is similar to that of the traditional Greek tragedy,i.e.,the cause of tragedy,plot development,catastrophe and punishment,awakening,elegy and readers’empathy.The blending space covers Eddie’s immoral love and readers’sympathy for his tragic ending.The emergent structure is not a mere mixture of elements from the two input spaces but a combination of those selectively projected from the spaces and integrated into a coherent new conceptual space.The play aims to enlighten the readers with Eddie’s sad life,purify their minds and enhance their self-restraints so as to avoid all kinds of disasters.
