This paper explores a series of core concepts around the "Discrete", as an architectural discourse on automation and architecture. It covers the broad cultural context for the work, coming out of the early digital work of the 1990 s and makes an argumentfor the need to consider the digital as enmeshed in the social and political. The research describes the technical basis of the discrete, as an attempt to understand the link between the mechanical engineering disciplines of Digital Materials and Programmable Matter and the architectural ideas of parts, prefabrication and modularity. The paper discusses one prototype in more depth and offers an insight in how the proposed method can scale up and continue existing Design for Manufacturing and Assembly standards. Ultimately, the paper advances an argument for Discrete Automation as a contemporary position on the digital in architecture, with disruptive potential for how we build and engage in the built environment.
