Tracing Back Wang Xuetao’s Artistic Activities in Peiping(1922-1949)

王雪涛在北京画坛的艺事始于1922年5月考入北平艺专,王梦白与齐白石是他求学期间最重要的两位师者。1926年他从北平艺专毕业,开启了自己的职业生涯:供职于多所公私立美术院校和中学,加入中国画学研究会,参与北京画坛精英圈的雅集展事,由此形成的人际网与朋友圈支持着他的职业化道路,但其间存在许多历史细节的不确定与错位。本文从北平求艺、北平入职与画坛立足三个角度,理析王雪涛民国时期艺术活动的具体史实,勾勒他在绘画本体探索之外的活动轨迹,还原一位职业画家建构职业身份的多元模式。

Wang Xuetao was enrolled in National Art School in Peiping in May 1922, which kicked off his artistic pursuit. Wang Mengbai and Qi Baishi were his most important mentors during his study. In 1926, he graduated from National Art School in Peiping and embarked on his career. He served in many public and private art academies and middle schools, joined the Chinese Painting Research Society, and participated in gatherings and exhibitions of the elite artists’ circle in Beijing. His career path was supported by the social network and friend circle formed wherefrom, although uncertainties and confusions existed in many historical details during this period. This paper traces back to Wang Xuetao’s three major stages: learning art in Peiping, career in Peiping and gaining a foothold in artistic circle, seeks the historical facts of his artistic activities during the period of Republic of China, and outlines the track of his activities beyond his painting exploration. On that basis, the paper restores a professional painter’s multi-modes in constructing his professional identity.
