Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in China, and its incidence is increasing year by year, which seriously endangers human health. Through the compilation of relevant ancient books and documents from the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period to the Republic of China Era,starting from the theory of“diabetes due to spleen deficiency”,the etiology and pathogenesis are analyzed as improper diet, spleen deficiency and loss of transportation;emotional disorder, worry and temper. Stagnation of mechanism, abnormal movements, dereliction of duty;insufficient endowment, deficiency of spleen, lack of biochemical source of Qi and blood;excessive fatigue, loss of spleen health, and endogenous phlegm. The key to its pathogenesis is spleen deficiency. Taking the spleen theory to treat diminishing thirst as the general outline, according to the different syndromes of spleen deficiency, the methods of invigorating the spleen and replenishing Qi,invigorating the spleen and dampness, promoting the Yang and invigorating the spleen are applied. In order to better provide reference for the research on the treatment of diabetes based on the spleen theory, the causes, syndromes and treatments of spleen deficiency caused by spleen deficiency are sorted out and excavated,in order to provide reference guidance for the research of ancient Chinese medicine literature and clinical practice.
