Shen Congwen has a close relationship with the May 4th Literary Revolution. His life experience, literary creation and literary thought were all deeply influenced by the May 4th Literary Revolution. Shen Congwen has always adhered to the principles and spirit of the May 4th Movement: he moved from passive obedience to self-reliance;he built a “Greek Temple of Human Nature”, attempting to rebuild national morality through “tool reconstruction” and “tool reuse”;he criticized the ties between literature and commercial capital and political factions that led to the degeneration of the literary movement,and advocated the true freedom and reasonable democracy that literature should have. The May 4th Literary Revolution inspired Shen Congwen, and Shen Congwen also carried forward the spirit of May 4th literature and made great contributions to the healthy development of modern Chinese literature.
