A New Study on the Time of Completion and the Reason for Compilation of Wang Shizhen’s Ancient Poetry Selection

关于王士禛《古诗选》的成书时间及编纂缘由,过去诸家多依据蒋寅《王渔洋事迹征略》中所引材料推断《古诗选》的成书时间,多依据蒋寅所论认为《古诗选》的编纂缘由是京师祝园集会。据考辨:《古诗选》初稿应于康熙二十年五月前后编选而成,则康熙二十一年七月的京师祝园集会不应是《古诗选》的编纂缘由。此选编纂背景乃是康熙诗坛唐宋之争,其编纂缘由即矫枉时弊、正本清源。

As for the time of completion and the reason for compilation of Wang Shi-zhen’s Ancient Poetry Selection, in the past, many scholars inferred the time of the completion based on the materials cited in Jiang Yin’s Brief Introduction of Wang Yuyang’s Deeds, and believed that its compilation was due to the Zhu-yuan assembly in the capital which was mainly based on Jiang Yin’s theory. According to the research and identification, the first draft of Ancient Poetry Selection should have been compiled in May of the 20th year of the Kangxi Dynasty, while the Zhu-yuan assembly in July of the 21st year of the Kangxi Dynasty should not be the reason for the compilation of Ancient Poetry Selection. The background of this compilation is the controversy between Tang and Song dynasties in Kangxi’s poetry circle.Its codification reason is to correct the current evils and restore the original source.
