Wu Rulun and Tongcheng School’s Spread in Shenzhou and Jizhou

吴汝纶是桐城派在北方传播的关键性人物,他继承了桐城先辈重视书院教育的传统,借助书院这个平台,极大推动了桐城派在直隶及北方周边地区的传播。在吴汝纶担任深州、冀州知州期间,他更是利用地方父母官的身份,大力推动当地书院的修复与建设,企图借助书院这一平台,改变当地士子的士风、学风、文风,同时宣扬桐城派因时而变、经世致用的主张。

Wu Rulun was a key figure in the spread of Tongcheng School in the north.He inherited the focus on the academy education of Tongcheng ancestors and greatly promoted the spread of Tongcheng School in Zhili and the surrounding areas in the north with the aid of the academy as a platform.During Wu Rulun’s tenure as Zhizhou in Shenzhou and Jizhou,he even made use of his capacity as a local official to vigorously promote the restoration and construction of the local academy,in an attempt to change the local scholars’style of scholar-officials,style of study and style of writing with the aid of the academy as a platform,and at the same time to advocate Tongcheng School’s idea of changing with time and humanistic pragmatism.
